Communique
As of today, 14 First Nations communities in BC are under evacuation order or alert. The outlook is for stable weather over the coming days. In preparation for the eventual return of First Nations to community, FNHA and associated agencies are developing a “coming home” guide which will support community leadership in assessment and rebuilding efforts.
Extension of Emergency Social Services
The 72 hour limitation for Emergency Support Services has been extended for evacuees that do not have insurance. For people already in group lodging or in a hotel this will be extended automatically, those who are camping or in other lodging will need to go back to the reception centre to get a referral extension. ESS is recommending that people bring their original paperwork to speed up the extension process.
Nursing Services in Evacuation Zones
Our prayers are with those communities who have made the difficult decision to remain home and protect their communities. Due to occupational health and safety laws and regulations, FNHA is unable to provide nursing services in communities that are under Provincial evacuation orders. We are working with our provincial counterparts to identify alternative options for emergency medical services.
Red Cross Update
Red Cross is reporting that its registration phone lines are open 24/7 and there are zero wait times. The phone number is 1-800-863-6582. People can also register online at www.redcross.ca
Air Quality Concerns
Smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility in some areas. Smoke modelling is predicting improvements to air quality over the next 24 hours. We recommend those in smoke-impacted areas avoid strenuous outdoor activities. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your health care provider: difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, and lung or heart disease.
Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.
Stay inside if you have breathing difficulties. Find an indoor place that’s cool and ventilated. Using an air conditioner that cools and filters air may help. If you open the windows you may let in more polluted air. If your home isn’t air-conditioned, consider going to a public place (library, shopping mall, recreation centre) that is air-conditioned.
Stay Up To Date
Our FNHA wildfire information page (
fnha.ca/wildfires) is the main source for FNHA updates on the wildfire situation, current evacuation zones, road closures, emergency phone lines and other crucial emergency services. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
