I wanted to ensure that national and international recognition for nurses is recognized by us all. Not only is today (May 12, 2020), International Nurses' Day, but this week is National Nursing Week. In addition, the World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

As the First Nations Health Authority, we take this moment to celebrate the great work of nurses throughout the province who are on the frontlines of the current global pandemic. We are proud and grateful for the work they do every day.

During this pandemic, our nurses are continuing to meet the needs of the First Nation communities they support, ensuring the best of health care to protect our Elders as the keepers of our history and culture.  FNHA highlights the importance of supporting nurses to take care of their own mental health and wellness. Uplifting our nurses is important and part of this support.

Attached are some suggestions on how you can safely celebrate nurses and midwives in your community during this time. I encourage you to acknowledge the good work nurses are doing. Even a moment's worth of acknowledgment can have a lasting impact in supporting nurses as they meet critical health needs in First Nation communities.

In health and wellness,

Richard Jock, I/CEO. FNHA
