Be a wellness influencer.

The people around us are a big part of our health and wellness journeys. They influence us, and we influence them. When participating in the Sober(er) for October Challenge, let your loved ones know of your commitment for the month and encourage them to join you!

First, take some time to think about your reasons for taking part in the challenge. After some self-reflection, set a realistic goal for the month. For some people, this will include trying to stop drinking altogether this month, and for others, it will be reducing or limiting the amount of drinks at a given time.

"The Sober(er) for October Challenge is a great opportunity for us to show leadership by participating and promoting the responsible use (or non-use) or alcohol. Getting people to join together and set goals, share their progress, and reap the benefits of making healthier choices – that's what this challenge is all about. Be sure to read the inspiring testimonials from past participants on our website!" ~ Dr. Shannon McDonald, Acting Chief Medical Officer

Sharing your goal with loved ones

Keep it simple. This is your health and wellness journey, and is up to you to decide how much information you want to share. With some people, you may want to keep it brief and to the point. For example, “I've decided to cut back on drinking this month," or “I hope you can support me in my efforts to not drink during the week."

In some instances, you may need to change social environments and let people know the changes you are making for the month. For example, if you usually take part in Friday Happy Hours, let your friends know you are making other plans for the month, such as going for a walk or watching a movie.

People may ask you questions about your Sober(er) for October goals. Remember, it's your wellness journey, and you don't have to explain yourself to anyone if you don't want to! Here are some responses should you decide to respond:

  • I want to focus on my wellness for the month.
  • It's a personal choice I've made for myself and the people around me.
  • It's a decision I made for myself. You are more than welcome to join me.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for the month

  • Remove substances including alcohol from your fridge, cupboards and anywhere that is accessible to you.
  • If/when you attend a social gathering or dinner, bring an alternative drink such as juice or fruit-infused water.
  • Have an exit plan for social gatherings or dinners that allows you to leave if you feel overwhelmed.
  • Try a new activity this month. Keep your mind busy and stay active!
