Bringing together both wellness worlds into one Lhtako Dene day

In Quesnel, the Lhtako Dene Nation believes that the community that spends time together is healthy together. They did this by hosting an event in their community hall as part of the Winter Wellness grants.

This event ensured that holistic health and wellness were always at the forefront of community member's minds. The Lhtako Dene Nation did this by mixing traditional wellness activities with access to health screening services. Traditional events that catered to youth, parents and Elders included such events as Hoop Dancing performers, medicine bag making, Elder storytelling and a community feast. Alongside these events were health screening activities such as blood pressure testing, glucose testing, diabetes information sessions and one on one time with nutritionists. This event allowed traditional and modern measures of wellness to come together for the benefit of the community, to share knowledge while keeping it fun.

"It makes me happy to see all the smiles on everyone's faces."

Another benefit for community was having youth and Elders working together. In this manner, Elders were imparting cultural and traditional teachings while youth were able to share their teachings through workshops and information booths.

"It's Amazing seeing the youth and Elders interact with each other to learn and teach each other something valuable. I loved hearing the elder's stories. They were very knowledgeable."

A challenge for organizers was that the community hall was too small for everything and everyone. However, this is always a welcomed challenge as this only means that community are interested in what is being offered.

The Lhtako Dene Nation has shown that wellness is a community event to be embraced and can be fun when we all work together.
