Accessing Blood Glucose Test Strips for the First Time

8/8/2019

It is important for people who have diabetes to learn about their condition. Checking blood sugar levels is one part of learning to live with diabetes as these numbers can inform and support decisions about diet, exercise or medications.

First Nations Health Benefits provides coverage for blood glucose test strips. Clients accessing these strips for the first time can activate this coverage with a call to the Health Benefits team at 1-855-550-5454.

Diabetes educators, nurses, health directors, and health advocates may also call Health Benefits on behalf of a client. Callers need to provide the client's information, including their Personal Health Number. This is a proactive way to ensure clients have coverage in place before they go to the pharmacy. However, if an FNHA client is at a pharmacy for blood glucose strips for the first time and there is no coverage in place, the pharmacist may also call Health Benefits.
