Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in BC, with First Nations people among those most at risk. Each year, thousands of sudden cardiac arrests occur across the province, disproportionately affecting those living in rural and remote communities where access to emergency medical services and equipment is often limited.

To help address these challenges, the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) is inviting First Nations communities to apply for the Here Another Day (HAD) CPR + Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program. Selected communities will receive AED kits, and community members will have opportunities to participate in a variety of trainings to help increase emergency response capacity.

An AED is an easy-to-use device that delivers a controlled shock to the chest of someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, helping to restore a normal heartbeat. When used in tandem with CPR, an AED can double a person's chances of survival.

The educational opportunities available to participating communities will include training on proper AED usage and CPR, and Emergency Medical Responder training.

How to apply

Applications are now open to all First Nations communities in BC. There are two ways to submit an application:

  1. Submit the form online via our survey platform: Here Another Day AED Program Application
  2. Download and submit a PDF version of the application form to AED@fnha.ca

While applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, communities are encouraged to apply by Jan. 2, 2026 as the first batch of AED kits will be distributed in early 2026. If you miss the preliminary deadline, we still encourage you to apply as more AEDs may become available depending on demand, and all communities that apply will have access to training opportunities.

If you are aware of a community that may have difficulty applying for this program, we encourage you to offer to apply on their behalf or support them with their application.
