A message from Dr. Kelsey Louie, FNHA Acting Deputy Chief Medical Officer

Road safety is a pressing issue in many First Nations communities in BC — especially for those in remote and rural areas where infrastructure is limited. Every year in Canada, around 1,800 people lose their lives, and 150,000 more are injured on the roads. Many of these tragedies are preventable.

In First Nations communities, safe roads are not just about preventing collisions. They connect people to health care, clean water, energy, and community services — all critical to wellness and quality of life. Improving access to these services lines up with the FNHA's mission and vision.

What Is the BC Vision Zero Road Safety Grant?

This grant supports community-led projects aimed at making roads safer for everyone. It offers up to $20,000 per project and gives priority to Indigenous communities and groups working in equity-seeking settings.

Projects may include:

  • Infrastructure upgrades (e.g., lighting, crosswalks, signage)
  • Policy, enforcement or legislative changes
  • Educational and awareness campaigns
  • Community-driven innovations that improve road safety

A dedicated funding stream is available especially for Indigenous Nations, governments, and organizations working with Indigenous communities.

Since the program began, it has funded more than 200 initiatives across BC, including at least 15 in First Nations communities in one recent year alone. You can read more about this here.
