Health Standards Organization (HSO), in partnership with FNHA is developing a new National Standard of Canada for Cultural Safety and Humility and is inviting members of the public to share their feedback.
The draft standard, entitled The Winds of Change, outlines expectations and accountabilities for governing bodies, leaders and teams in health and social service organizations. It focuses on working collaboratively with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples and communities to design, deliver and evaluate culturally safe services, and to address Indigenous‑specific racism in service delivery.
The public review is open until Feb. 27, 2026, and all interested individuals are encouraged to read the draft and share their perspectives. The draft standard and instructions on how to provide feedback are available on HSO's website: https://healthstandards.org/public-reviews/cultural-safety-and-humility
As part of the review process, HSO has also released a documentary that explores the development of the standard and the perspectives that shaped it. [embedded youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBnzUSxHzKU]
FNHA and HSO first partnered on the BC Cultural Safety and Humility Standard, which was published in 2021. The first of its kind of Canada, the standard inspired this follow-up effort to embed cultural safety and humility not just to health and social service organizations in BC, but across the country.
