The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) joins Indigenous communities across the world in honouring and celebrating Two-Spirit (2S) and LGBTQQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual) individuals this Pride Month. In solidarity with the 2S/LGBTQQIA+ community during Pride Month, FNHA will be updating our logo on our social media channels to feature the FNHA Pride emblem.
For generations, First Nations recognized the valued roles of Two-Spirit people within our families and communities. They were seen as knowledge keepers, healers, and leaders. However, colonialism disrupted these traditions, introducing discrimination that marginalized 2S/LGBTQQIA+ people. While these impacts persist, many continue to reclaim their identities, strengthen connections to culture, and find support in community. Pride month is a time to acknowledge the past while looking toward a future where all identities are honoured and valued. FNHA stands alongside those reclaiming space and reinforces the importance of safe and affirming environments for 2S/LGBTQQIA+ people.
FNHA remains committed to ensuring culturally safe health care and services for all First Nations people, including 2S/LGBTQQIA+ individuals. This work is rooted in the principles of respect, inclusion, and equity. Healing and recognition are ongoing, but the strength and resilience of Indigenous 2S/LGBTQQIA+ communities continue to inspire change.
