“Being in the mountains, being at the lake, being on the canoe. These are all ways our people have healed over the last hundreds of years."  - Mavis Pierre, Katzie Nation

Summer is almost here, and we hope everyone will make time to enjoy the extra sunlight and the beauty of the great outdoors. Spending time on the land isn't just good for the body; it also nurtures our spirit. Since time immemorial, First Nations people have held a wholistic, sacred connection to the land and waters that continues to support our health and wellness today.

To honour and celebrate this connection, the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) will be running a summer photo initiative on social media for First Nations people living in BC.

How to participate

You can share photos of yourself, your friends or loved ones enjoying summer on the lands and waters to cmo.office@fnha.ca with the subject line “Summer on the Land." Be sure to include a short description of each photo and the names and Nations of those pictured.

Whether you're swimming in a lake, picking berries, dancing at a powwow, or walking in your territory, we'd love to see how you connect with the land this summer. Cultural and traditional activities are especially encouraged, like canoeing, camping, fishing, hunting, smoking or canning salmon, making dry meat, or attending outdoor ceremonies and gatherings.

We'll share many of your photos on FNHA social media and enter participants into random draws for a chance to win a $25 gift card. Send us your photos to join in the fun. We can't wait to see the land through your lens this summer!
